Have you decided to brave the world and travel alone for the first time?
Not having someone by your side to ask questions and keep you company at all times may feel daunting but travelling solo has many perks of its own! You can travel on your own terms, go where you want to go, when you want to. You can make friends and connect with new people, or if you would prefer, you can choose some alone time.
Here are our 7 top tips for those who have decided to travel on their own for the first time.
Understand your travel style
Are you an outgoing person who loves to be around people, or are you more relaxed on your own? Do not feel pressured into situations that you are not comfortable with. After all, this is YOUR trip and you only need to please yourself.
If you are traveling alone, you will not have someone to help you with your bags. Can you carry your bag up 5 flights of stairs alone?
They say travelers pack half the possessions and double the money, and this we understand. Take out the ‘just in case’ items, you won’t need them. If you do, you’ll manage, or you can buy something abroad instead.
Do not feel silly eating alone
Let’s face facts, you can’t travel on your own and not eat. Sure, you can take food back to your room, but where is the fun in that?
You are not the first person to eat in a restaurant alone. If you are really uncomfortably with eating in a restaurant alone, perhaps start by picking somewhere which allows you to eat at the bar or start with lunch alone rather than dinner.
If you want to keep yourself occupied, perhaps take a book/e-reader, write in a journal, or simply play with your phone.
Lonely? Book a tour
Booking onto a tour is a great way of being able to have conversations with people other than yourself and could be a great way to meet other solo travelers, and maybe even make some friends. There are often tours created specifically for solo travelers too!
Have a comprehensive travel insurance policy with a reputable company
Travel insurance is there to keep you and your belongings safe and covered both medically and financially should something happen. If you are travelling solo, it is even more important to have this safety net.
We at Allianz Global Assistance have over 15,000 associates worldwide which you can call anytime, day or night, from anywhere in the world, should you need assistance.

Wherever you are, always keep your wits about you. Know your escape routes in every situation, be it a restaurant, your hotel or simply an area or country (do you have enough money to leave?).
Also keep your bags closed with your phone and wallet out of sight. If you have a shoulder bag, pop it over your head so it can’t be snatched (clutch bags are the worst for this!).
Make sure someone knows where you are
If you have a travel scheduled, let someone back home have a copy, just so they know where you are should they ever need. Always make sure you check in with family or friends regularly. They worry, and it will save a lot of hassle for you to keep them happy and in the know.
If you are about to embark on the trip of a lifetime on your own, we hope you have the most amazing time.
