Tips for backpacking in Australia

Allianz Travel - B1

You are about to set off on the adventure of a lifetime! The experiences that you will have from back packing a new country are ones you cannot get at home!

We want to make sure that you make the most of your trip, so here are our top tips for you to read over before you hit that open, red tinged road!

Plan a rough route and itinerary

Many underestimate the sheer size of Australia. They say it takes an absolute minimum of 3 weeks travel the east coast from Sydney to Cairns, and that doesn’t include spending much time at any one place.

Make a rough itinerary of the places you must visit then research the time it takes to get between. You wouldn’t want to miss a once in a lifetime opportunity because you wanted to spend a little longer at your current destination.

How to get from place to place

Flying is obviously the quickest way to get from one place to the next if you are restricted with time, but this can get costly.

There are many other ways to get around the country for much less, but be prepared for cramped, overnight busses or long trains. Whilst this may not sound too exciting, you do get to take the scenic route and see the changing landscapes of the country as you travel.

Research your best route and costs according to your budget.

What to pack

Sunscreen! The ozone layer has been damaged throughout the years and it is essential that you were good sunscreen. Even if it is cloudy, slap it on thick and keep yourself safe. After all, you don’t want to waste time exploring just because you are painfully burnt! That’s no fun.

In Australia is does rain! So, make sure you are prepared for that if it were to happen. Melbourne in particular is known to have 4 seasons in one day! A light waterproof jacket should do the job.

Headphones and music – there will be a lot of travelling and waiting around. This will get you through!

Stay safe!

That includes you, your personal belongings, and your plans! You never know what might happen – a flight may be cancelled, sand might ruin your mobile phone or you may get a little sick and have to change your plans.

None of these things can be avoided, but you can make sure you are covered financially so that you are not out of pocket for them.

The good news is that we can help with that. Get in touch with one of our sales team ASAP, as soon as any travel bookings have been made, and we will guide you through the process and give you the best prices.

When you are there…

Try the native food

Did you know that Kangaroo meat is a favourite of Australian athletes due to its low-fat and higher than average protein content? It tastes pretty good too. Also, don’t be afraid to try Emu, Crocodile and bugs!

Talk to locals

The Aussies are super friendly and keen to talk about their home. They are the best source of information for getting the local top places to visit. Make sure you speak to them to find out their highly-recommended restaurants, cafes and places of interest!

In fact, talk to everyone!

Often it is the people that you meet along the way that ‘make’ your trip. You will be surrounded by others that have a common interest – travelling! With these people, you are never alone.

Including your friends and family back home

Don’t forget about your family and friends! You will likely be a long way from home on a very different time zone. They may be worried if they don’t hear from you for a while so do the right thing and at least send them a text ever few days! They will be wanting to hear from you.

We hope you have a wonderful time on your travels! Sun, sand, coral reefs, different food, the open road… we are not jealous at all…
