Schengen travel insurance is a specialised type of travel insurance designed to meet the mandatory requirements of the Schengen visa application process. It is a legal prerequisite for any non-EU traveller - including UAE residents and expatriates - who needs a visa to enter the Schengen Area.

The Schengen Area covers 29 European countries that have eliminated internal border controls, creating a unified travel zone spanning from Portugal to Finland. To obtain a Schengen visa, every applicant must provide proof of valid travel insurance that meets strict criteria set by the European Commission.

What Makes Allianz Insurance 'Schengen-Compliant'?

Not every travel insurance policy qualifies as Schengen visa insurance. To be accepted by European embassies and consulates, a Schengen travel insurance policy must:

  • Provide a minimum of €30,000 (approximately USD $32,000) in emergency medical coverage
  • Cover the entire duration of your intended stay in the Schengen Zone
  • Be valid across all 29 Schengen member states
  • Include emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains
  • Come with an official insurance certificate (not just a policy document) that embassies will accept
  • Allianz Schengen Travel Insurance from UAE provides USD $50,000 in emergency medical coverage - significantly exceeding the minimum requirement - along with an instantly issued, embassy-accepted certificate that is automatically sent to your email upon purchase.

Schengen visa insurance is required for travellers whose nationality requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area. Whether you are an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, or other nationality residing in the UAE, if your passport requires a Schengen visa, you must hold valid Schengen travel insurance throughout your trip.

Even if you do not need a Schengen visa (e.g., US, UK, or Canadian passport holders), we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for Europe, as medical costs across Europe can be significant without coverage.

👤 Individual Travellers

Solo trips, business travel, or tourist visits to Europe. Any individual aged 0–85 years can be covered under our Schengen travel insurance policy.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families

Travel as a family with our special family package rates. 2 adults with unlimited children listed on a single, easy-to-manage policy. Plus, children travel at 50% off.

👵 Senior Travellers

We cover senior travellers up to 85 years of age. Our Schengen visa insurance for seniors ensures you have access to the medical support you need abroad.

When you submit your Schengen visa application at a European embassy or consulate in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the visa officer will check your travel insurance against specific criteria. Here is exactly what your Schengen travel insurance must prove:

Minimum Coverage of €30,000

Your Schengen visa insurance must provide at least €30,000 (approximately USD $32,000) in emergency medical expense coverage. Allianz provides USD $50,000 - well above the minimum requirement.

Coverage for the Entire Schengen Zone

The policy must be valid in all Schengen Area countries - not just your primary destination. This is especially important for multi-country itineraries.

Coverage for the Full Duration of Stay

Your Schengen travel insurance must cover every day of your intended stay - from your entry date to your exit date. Coverage cannot be purchased after your trip has started.

Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation

Your policy must include coverage for emergency evacuation to the nearest suitable medical facility and repatriation to your home country if medically necessary.

Official Insurance Certificate

You must submit an official insurance certificate - not a payment receipt or a policy summary. With Allianz, your Schengen-compliant insurance certificate is emailed to you instantly upon purchase and is accepted by all European embassies.

IMPORTANT: Your nationality - not your country of residence - determines whether you need a Schengen visa. Check with the relevant European embassy in the UAE to confirm your visa requirements before purchasing.

All Allianz outbound travel insurance products from UAE are Schengen-compliant by default, meaning every policy meets these mandatory visa requirements from day one.

Schengen Visa Requirements

Yes. Schengen visa insurance is a legal requirement for all non-EU nationals who require a Schengen visa to enter Europe. Without valid Schengen travel insurance, your visa application will be rejected. The insurance must provide a minimum of €30,000 in emergency medical coverage, cover the full duration of your stay, and be valid across all Schengen Area countries.

Allianz provides an instantly issued, embassy-accepted certificate that meets all these requirements.

Even if you already have international health insurance, you may still need to purchase a travel insurance policy that specifically meets Schengen visa requirements. This includes clearly defined coverage limits, eligible territories (Schengen area), and compliance with embassy criteria. Not all health insurance policies meet these requirements, so it’s important to ensure your coverage is fully compliant.

You can get your Schengen insurance for just AED 56 per person. This varies per duration and number of travellers. You can get an instant quote easily.

Regular travel insurance is a broad category of trip protection that varies widely in what it covers. Schengen travel insurance is a specific subset of travel insurance that is engineered to meet the European Union's mandatory requirements for Schengen visa applicants - including the minimum €30,000 medical coverage, repatriation cover, and multi-country validity.

All Allianz outbound travel insurance products from UAE are Schengen-compliant, meaning even our standard single-trip and annual multi-trip plans qualify for Schengen visa purposes.

Allianz Schengen travel insurance covers all 29 countries in the Schengen Area: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

A single policy covers your entire multi‑country European itinerary - you do not need separate policies for each country.

If your nationality is visa-exempt for the Schengen Area (such as UK, US, Canadian, or Australian passport holders), you are not legally required to hold Schengen travel insurance. However, we strongly recommend purchasing Europe travel insurance regardless. Medical treatment in Europe is extremely expensive - a single day of hospitalisation in Switzerland can cost over USD $1,000. Without insurance, you would be personally liable for any medical bills, evacuation costs, or trip disruption expenses.

Coverage & Benefits

Allianz Schengen travel insurance provides the following core coverage:

  • Emergency medical expenses up to USD $50,000 (hospitalisation, surgery, outpatient treatment)
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation to your home country
  • Repatriation of mortal remains
  • Return of dependents (under 18) if you are hospitalised
  • Emergency family travel - a close relative can be flown to your bedside
  • Emergency dental treatment (up to USD $100)
  • Trip cancellation (up to USD $2,000)
  • Baggage loss (up to USD $1,000) and baggage delay (up to USD $200)
  • Search and rescue (up to USD $1,000)

All Allianz Schengen travel insurance policies are compliant with the mandatory €30,000 minimum medical coverage requirement for Schengen visa applications.

Allianz has one of the largest global medical networks and, in most cases, can arrange direct billing with healthcare providers, so you do not need to pay upfront.

However, coverage and payment method are always subject to the policy terms and conditions. In certain situations, you may need to pay initially and submit a claim for reimbursement.

You should purchase Schengen travel insurance before submitting your Schengen visa application - not before your travel date. Since visa processing can take 2 - 4 weeks or more, it is advisable to buy your Schengen visa insurance at least 3 - 4 weeks before your intended departure.

Note that once purchased, the dates on your policy cannot be changed, so confirm your travel dates before buying.

All valid policies must be purchased prior to your departure from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Policies purchased after departure will be deemed as invalid.

Cancellations & Refunds

Once a policy has been issued, changes to travel dates are not allowed. However, you may request a cancellation and refund, provided that:

  • Your trip has not started, and
  • The policy has not yet incepted, and
  • No claims have been made

You can then purchase a new policy with the correct travel dates.

Yes. Visa rejection is one of the covered conditions under Trip Cancellation. If your schengen visa application is rejected, you can request a policy cancellation and refund - even beyond the standard 14-day cancellation period - provided that:

  • Your trip has not started yet, and
  • No claims have been made on the policy, and
  • You submit a copy of the official visa rejection letter from the embassy.

Please contact the Allianz Travel UAE team as soon as you receive the rejection to initiate your request.
